B.C. fuel cell expertise is driving growth for a Daimler Trucks-Volvo Group joint venture
Publish Date: 3/2/2023

Cellcentric was forged in 2021 by two of Europe’s leading heavy-duty truck makers: Volvo Group and Daimler Trucks. Cellcentric’s mission is to develop, produce and commercialize fuel systems for heavy-duty trucks. At IAA last fall, it debuted its “new generation” fuel cell system, a 150-kW power plant boasting a service life equal to that of “a conventional diesel unit in long-distance use.”

The prototype unit came out of Cellcentric’s headquarters in Stuttgart. But its key components are the hydrogen fuel cells and fuel cell stacks. They are made at the new Cellcentric fuel cell manufacturing plant in Burnaby, B.C.

It’s all hydrogen: CERAWeek focuses on potential fuel of the future
Publish Date: 3/7/2023

As the topic of hydrogen came up yet again during one of the larger sessions on the first day of CERAWeek, a panelist quipped that the conference perhaps should be renamed Hydrogen Week.

And if the energy transition ever makes it to heavy-duty trucking, that rising focus of the energy industry on hydrogen would be good news, given that hydrogen appears to be the consensus energy source that could power a truck as big as those in the Class 8 category.

Creating a Canadian Advantage: Policies to Help Canada Compete for Low-Carbon Investment
Publish Date: 3/3/2023

There is a risk that Canada could miss out on the huge opportunities available in the low-carbon transition because our investment environment is less attractive than that in the United States. In particular, the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has opened up a wide gap between the revenue available from public-policy sources for new low-carbon technology deployment in Canada versus the US.

State OKs $2M for GM, Honda fuel cell operation
Publish Date: 2/28/2023

General Motors Co. and Honda Motor Co. are moving forward with their joint-venture fuel cell operation slated for Brownstown Township, six years after the companies first announced their plans to create an industry-first fuel cell manufacturing operation in Michigan.

On Tuesday, the Michigan Economic Development Corp.’s Michigan Strategic Fund board awarded a $2 million state grant for the $48.9 million project that could create up to 70 total new jobs. The MSF board in 2017 approved a $2 million grant but the companies weren’t able to meet certain timing requirements to receive it, according to the MEDC.

Does the Green Hydrogen Economy Have a Water Problem?
Publish Date: 8/17/2021

These numbers suggest that water supply will not be the limitation for electrolyzers, and we should instead continue to focus on technological improvements for the energy efficiency of electrolyzers, which is currently the limiting factor and has the potential for significant advancements. While the concern about the “water problem” is much more prevalent in the journalistic community than among scientists, journalism can have a significant influence on the acceptance of hydrogen as a growing market. It is therefore essential that we rigorously characterize the true water requirement of electrolysis technology, without the influence of water needs for the current non-renewable infrastructure, to get a clear idea of the impact hydrogen can have on a renewable energy future.
